The listing of fire units per nation requires correction: Belgium assigned only three fire units: per wing; Denmark assigned three SAM Hawk and three SAM Nike fire units; Norway had only three SAM Nike fire units assigned. The RDaAF and the RNoAF SAM units were restricted to nationally rather individualized readiness requirements. Assigned manning substantially reduced the capabilities of these units in regard to sustained readiness and sustained operations. While I observed the ACE SAM TacEval programs in my SHAPE staff function in the Northern, Central and Southern Region between 1974 and 1978 the RDaAF and RNoAF SAM crews constantly showed an impressive professionalism.

I was introduced to the SAM Nike System during my interpreter training in 1958. In 1959 I was sent on temporary duty to the German AF Liaison Staff at Fort Bliss to serve in the interpreter group with a large number of commissioned and non-commissioned officers. Our job was to provide consecutive translations from the class platform in cooperation with the US instructor in USAADS courses for GAF personnel and to translate written manuals and instruction papers.

US missile technology at that time was ahead of the rest of the western world; the German translator was constantly faced with technical terms for which German equivalents just did not exist. So we were constantly urged to generate new German terms and to then constantly use them in our daily work, verbally or in writing. Thus, two special books were written in the Interpreters Group (IG =Sprachmittlergruppe) during my first tour in Fort Bliss: an American-German Dictionary of Guided Missile Technology. This dictionary from the very first printing was called <Der Große Franke>, because Capt. Franke, then Chief of the IG was its initiator and publisher. Only shortly after that, another smaller dictionary was published by the IG. This was a collection of what in German we would call <labskaus linguae>, like the following example:

<a make before break contact> was the name of a safe power switch found in the immediate vicinity of pyrotechnics. So the IG found a new German term for it: <eine Bekanntschaft vor dem Frühstück>

Inevitably this little booklet then was called <Der Kleine Franke>.

<Der Große Franke> not only was a great help for German students in Fort Bliss. This book had a key function when the Turkish officers underwent their SAM Nike Training in Fort Bliss. I interpreted in a German officer course, which was visited by a small group of Turkish officers who prepared themselves for their interpreter job in subsequent Turkish courses. Most of these Turkish officers had a fair command of the German language, and they had to develop their own American – Turkish Dictionary. <Der Große Franke> served as essential go-between, because the mostly descriptive character of newly created German terms often facilitated a good lead to a useful Turkish term. The first Turkish officers worked almost 24 hours a day; some German interpreters helped them in many long night sessions by clarifying and/or confirming the meaning of the German terms.

After this historical background my question to all visitors and/or guests: does anybody know of the whereabouts of a copy of <Der Große Franke> and/or <Der Kleine Franke? Please, contact me!

I was SPO in 4./22 (Marienheide) from Oct 80 until June 82.I have a photo from NAMFI / Crete that I shot in late Sep 81 when we had our ASP. It´s 300 dpi, umcompressed about 1 MByte. How can I send it?It´s a 23 yaer old copy from a slide and I could scan the original slide on my sister´s scanner with a slide adapter.We had a rating of 99,75% and we were told it was the best result for a German battery at that time. There was only 1 minor in the assembly phase. I also have some more nice Nike pictures. Rolf

Kommentar: I was with HQ 576th Artillery group in Karlsruhe from 1965 to aproximatley Aug 1966 when the group was disbanded. I was a personnel clerk there and was responsible for shipping many of the soldiers to other places. It was a great unit and I hated to see it close. I got the priviledge of being shipped to Turkey after that.

I am one of the local girls from Bad-Bertrich, just 5 KM from the battery. We meet in 1969 and left to the US in 1973. In the early 60's my father had a guesthouse in Bad-Bertrich, and many gis would come there and party. Soldier from Hontheim would call my Mom, because of her cooking. In those times my Dad was one of the very few people in that area who spoke fluent english, therefore assisted many soldiers in matters around the community. Kommentar: Mein Gott, wie schön, dass ich diese Seite gefunden habe. Ich war selbst mit Hawk 1976 in Ft. Bliss und die tollen Infos über Mama waren wie eine Zeitreise für mich. Zutiefst beeindruckt hat mich die Aktion mit der Grabplatte. Das hat Mama wirklich verdient. Ich habe sie in ihrem 24Std-Einsatz für uns junge Soldaten schätzen und bewundern gelernt. Sie war unser allgegenwärtiger Schutzengel in diesem brodelnden Juarez. Ich habe so oft an sie und an diese aufregende Zeit dort drüben gedacht. Ich kann meine 3 Monate dort auch nach nunmehr 28 Jahren nicht vergessen, zu sehr hat mich der Aufenthalt in El Paso beeindruckt.Ansonsten eine wirklich tolle und informative Seite.

Ich hab den provider gewechselt deshalb warscheinlich keine er-mail Post erhalten. Zu mir: ich war von 61 bis 71 in Oedingen bei der 1./FalRakBtl.22 (IFC).Ich habe nie mehr im Zivilleben so eine über Jahrzehnte dauernde Freundschaft/Kameradschaft erlebt. Noch heute nach ca. 40 Jahren pflege ich bzw. wir ein Kameradenkreis aus dieser Zeit diese Kontakte. Ich hatte einfach mal über Google Nike Flugabwehrsystem eingegeben und wie in einer Zeitmaschine habe ich mich 40 Jahre zurück katapultiert. Wünsche allen "Ehemaligen" noch eine schöne Zeit. Kommentar: Ich muß noch eine Kleinigkeit nachschieben: Was die 1./21 anbelangt, ist der Querverweis auf Warendorf nur insoweit richtig, als die Einheit im KREIS WARENDORF stationiert war. Westkirchen ist allerdings Ortsteil der Stadt ENNIGERLOH. ( Nur der Ordnung halber, und damit sich keiner auf den Schlips getreten fühlt )

Nach vielen Jahren Abstinenz konnte ich mich endlich wieder in die Nike Herkules Welt hineinversetzen.
Ich war in den Jahren 1971 bis 1977 im FlarakBtl 2/23 in Schöneck als "225" im Wartungs- und Montagebereich unter Hfw Knoll tätig und konnte mehrere Jahresschiessen auf Kreta mitmachen. Sehr gerne erinnere ich mich an die Ausbildung in Ft. Bliss und die stets hilfsbereite Mama im Club Rainer in Cd. Juarez.

Kommentar: Hei. You write; "The military airfield has now become Roskilde airport". This is a wrong information. The airfield was build as civil airport from the beginning. It was plased between Skalstrup and LCA (missile place) Eskadrille 534. In a war it was possible to take supplies in by the airfield, but in real it was not a possible way - if we fired a missile, the first part of the missile had to end at the airfield after it had been empty of fuel. The airfield had to close down when the missiles was planned to be used.

Habe leider seinen Nachnamen vergessen, weis nur das er Klaus heist mit einer Mexikanerin namens Patricia verheiratet ist/war und ein Tochter hat die Claudia heist. Hat damals Dienst in Soest geleistet und ist aber nach 12 Jahren ausgeschieden. Ander Lehrgangsteilnehmer waren, Michael Hill, Friedrich Beste, Stefan Richter, Peter Holländer. Rocket Cop. Seeing the pictures on your site of my old base was like going back in time. The base looks basically the same except for its run down condition. I has many a good time there. I can remeber having many a beer and dinner in the Guesthause at the bottom of the hill in Grunstadt. The place was called Willeys. They had Great Schnitzel.

Kommentar: I was stationed at Alpha Battery, 2-62 ADA (HAWK)from 1976 to 1980 as a HAWK Fire Control Operator and again in Alpha Battery 1-1 ADA (HAWK) 1988 to 1991. I was a Platoon Sergeants when the unit inactivated and we turned the property back over to the German officials in 1991.
I spent 8 years in the Eifel and I really miss the beautiful countryside and all my wonderful German friends. Best wishes to all of you.

Kommentar: I was stationed with Delta, 2nd of the 1st (Nike-Hercules) in Dichtelbach, FRG from November, 1974 until May 1976. I was originally a heavy anti-armor crewman (11H), but was assigned to Dichtelbach because of my Secret clearance. I served as a missile crewman (16B) in Alpha Section and in time became the section sergeant. It was a rather interesting assignment and I will always remember my time there. I was more fortunate than most of the Americans stationed there as I had many German friends (Herr Sherman, Herr Diehl, Flori, Christine, Trixie, Arnd, Angelika, Martina, Axel, Katja, & Rita) and even married a girl from Dichtelbach. I will never forget MSG Gilbert, SFC Lovin, 1LT Prevost, CWO Terry, CWO Guhl, Mace, Muniak, Baker, Sorci, Melvin Mitchell, Tom Collins, Dusty Rhodes, Isham, Shadow, SFC Agnew, Gene, Larry Gamble, and so many others that I can see in my mind's eye, but their names escape me at this time. I have returned to Dichtelbach many times and I have walked up to see the Launch Area, Admin Area, and Radar Site. It is sad to see them in their present state, but in my memories "Mad Dog" Muniak is waiting at Post 1 to issue my badge to me, the Blue Smoke Express will be leaving for BK after shift change, the OK Corral waits for the heads, and Pepo's will be open tonight. Please post my name with the other Dichtelbacher Delta Dogs.

Ich bin jetzt 52 Jahre alt. Vor meiner USA-Zeit war ich in Burbach (Nike) stationiert. Ich wünschte es gäbe einen Knall und ich sässe bei Mamasitta in Juarez und hätte ein Tecate vor mir stehen. An alle Fans ein Adios Amigos.

Kommentar: I was stationed at the Geinsheim site in December 1967 and lived in Hassloch. The unit was Battery A, third battalion, 71st ADA, and the headquarters was in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart. I remained at the site until about March of 1970. In the summer of 1969, the battery was redesignated as A battery, second Battalion, 56th ADA with headquarters in Pirmasens. I was the unit commander at the time of this redesignation. The site at Germersheim was closed at this time and some of the equipment was transferred to Geinsheim. I do recall that the Commander at Germersheim. Lt. Daryl Bellis, became my executive officer and the IFC platoon leader, Lt. Michael Shields also transferred to Geinsheim. The battalion commander was LTC Orton F. Spencer and he was succeded in 1969 by LTC Daniel Fleming. When I transferred to the Battalion headquarters in Pirmasens in spring of 1970, the new commander was Cpt. Morris. The battery had no HIPAR at the time I left Germany in January of 1971. The concrete in one of the 2002 photos was located near the place where the sewage holding tank was placed. It was a huge concrete structure, partially above ground. I sure enjoyed seeing my old office in the photos of the admin area. Thanks for the work you did putting all those photos and information together.
