Ich habe selbst 12 Jahre bei NIKE im 4./flaRakBtl 23 in Westerburg verbracht. Eine wunderbare Zeit, die man wohl nicht so schnell vergessen kann, auch wenn sich die Natur schon lange ihr Terain auf unserem "IFC Berg" zurück geholt hat. Der Bericht über "Mamas" Grabplatte hat mich sehr bewegt. Ich habe sie wohl noch zu ihrer besten Zeit 76/77 und 80/81 erlebt und kann voll bestätigen , dass alles so war, wie es auf Deinen Seiten zu lesen ist. Ich war W18er ab Jan. 68 Ab Apr. 68 – Jun.69 beim 1./FlaRakBtl 25 in Ahlhorn in der IFC / BCT. Chef: Hptm. Eisenhaber; BCO`s: Lt. Jensen, OLt. Delling, Olt. Brummund. Dienst in der 1.KB, Schieß-Crew. Feb.69 NAMFI Crete beim ASP (Ergebnis über 90%. Es gab später 1 Tag Sonderurlaub) Wir sind noch mit der alten „Tante Nora“ geflogen. Ahlhorn Chania via Rom. Wir hatten einige Tage verlängerten Aufenthalt, weil zwischenzeitlich Airport Ahlhorn total eingeschneit war. Sind aber dann letztendlich mit einer Amerikanischen Herkules nonstop nach Frankfurt ausgeflogen worden. Von dort mit Bahn und Bus zurück nach Ahlhorn. Boy, was I amazed at how the site grew and then was abandoned. I sure am glad it never had to be used for it's real purpose. I really enjoyed the time I had in Germany and with the people of Kastelaun and Hundheim and Wuschheim. I remember freinds and I walking around the countryside, taking in the sites, seeing the old castles. We loved to stop in the small towns and get something to eat and drink. I remember the German soldiers we would meet in Kastelaun. We used to play Foosball and drink ourselves silly. Oh well, we were young then. I have many photos of the One Six Duece as we used to call it. 162 Ord Det. These photos are of our work, our play.. our lives far from home. It was a wonderful group of guys, and I can tell you enough to fill a novel.. in fact, I began writing a novel based on that Smith Barracks and the One Six Duece. I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find this, and many other sites dedicated to the Nike history in Germany and all over the world. You did a great job. If you wish, I'll send you photos, history.. I was in Internal Guidance.. also taught at Redstone.. lab classes...... I so well remember the Nahe Valley, the people, and I hope to see it all again. These radar were deployed throughout the U.S., NATO countries, Korea and around the globe. I would like to find people who worked on these systems because I am investigating whether or not people working on these radars were exposed to radiation emitted by this equipment. I am informed that radar systems using technologies including magnetron, klystron and thyratron components are more likely to emit this kind of radiation. I would like to hear from anyone who worked in and around such equipment or who can put me in touch with other people from all branches of the service who might have information regarding potential exposure to radiation produced by these radar systems. Since January 1980 I was an Taceval-evaluator for the Launching Area. I was on almost all the batteries of the Germans, Americans and Belgiums sites for an evaluation. By the Germans also for there local evaluations. I have meet a many fine people and I have had always a lot of fun with them and was often very thirsty. I still have a good memory of all that evaluations and will give al the people who know my the best wishes. I am now already 65 years and in pension. God bless you all! It brought back a lot of memories from my time there in Wuschheim at Battery B. , 5th. Battalion , 6th. ADA. ( B-5-6 ) from Sept.1974 to Mar.1976. I was a Nike Hercules Fire Control Crewman, radar operator. I purchased my computer not that long ago and just last week was thinking about my time at B-5-6 and started to check for information about the Nike Hercules. Finding information on the internet was a surprise and the pictures was a nice treat. I remember walking to the IFC hill from the barracks and the nice people of Houndheim that I’d meet on the way. We waved to each other with a smile. I didn’t speak German just a few words. When the Launch Area needed help I’d volunteer. And ended up spending a lot of time learning to do different jobs and lots of guard duty. Looking at the pictures of the old area and how it changed over the years was a surprise. During my time at B-5-6 we were not allowed to take pictures of the IFC area or the Launch Area. What I do have is pictures of friends at the barracks and just what I can remember of the rest. I was sadden to see the picture of the IFC hill with no equipment and the launch area guard shack abandoned and in disrepair. Times do change and it is out with the old and in with the new.
