An early view on a temporary Nike training site in Germany about 1960. From the new flats in the background , which are untypical for the surroundings of a missile site, we can guess that it might be the area "Berger Feld" in the industrial town of Gelsenkirchen . The site had been a waste war-damaged area with an old World War II-camp for anti-air-artillery . At about 1960 Nike equipment for training of the first German Battaillons was installed there. The Nikes soon left , but until 1969 the camp was further used by former 5 Logistic Regiment (Essen) of the German airforce. Today "Berger Feld" has become a place for sport centres, a comprehensive school and firms or supermarkets. The stadium of the famous football team "Schalke 04" is not far from "Berger Feld". |
